What is Microsurgery ?

It is a highly specialised subspecialty of Plastic Surgery in which body structures which are 1-3 mm in diameter are operated upon, usually re-joined after injury by the Plastic Surgeon, under a microscope which magnifies the vision 5-10 times so as to visualise and repair them.

Where is it used in Plastic Surgery ?

It has many uses in Plastic Surgery. The technique of Microsurgery is used to repair/re-attach cut blood vessels, cut nerves, or cut body parts after any injury.

It also has an application in tissue transfer, also called as a Free Flap – when there is a wound which requires coverage but tissue adjoining it is not available to be moved, then the required tissue is taken from a distant body part where it is expendable. This tissue is taken with its intact blood vessels (artery and veins) which is then moved to the required area, placed and sutured there and then the blood vessels of that new tissue is joined by microsurgery to a nearby adjoining major blood vessel (both artery and vein) so that blood can flow through the new tissue in its new location. This new tissue thus integrates into this location and looks and functions normally again.

Eg – In tongue cancer after the cancerous tongue is removed from the mouth, the Plastic Surgeon, creates a new tongue from the skin with blood vessel from the forearm and this new tongue is stitched in the original tongues location and then using Microsurgery, joins the new tissues blood vessel to the neck’s blood vessel so as to make the new tissue living again. Similarly it can be used to reconstruct various structures in head-neck like jaw bone, cheek bone, cheek, breasts, cancers in other parts of the body, wounds in various parts of the body.

It is also used to re-join amputated body parts after accidents – like hand, fingers, scalp, genitilia etc, when brought in with proper storage to a Plastic Surgeon within 6 hours of injury occurring.

Any side effects

There are no side effects from the procedure, itself but Sometimes the blood flow in the new tissue can stop due to a blood clot, which may require further procedures to remedy it. The recovery from the surgery and the original injury will take time depending on the severity.

Preparation

Once you have chosen to go ahead with the procedure, Dr Suhas will advise you a few blood tests etc to ensure that you are indeed in good health otherwise.
