What is Cleft Lip and Palate ?
Cleft Lip and Palate are congenital problems in the face wherein there is a gap in the lip or the palate (roof of the mouth), which not only causes a cosmetic problem but mainly problems occur in speech, feeding and breathing.
Hence when it is observed in newborn babies, its correction is done by surgery from 3-5 months onwards. If both Cleft lip and palate are present, it is repaired one after the other.

Preparation

Procedure Details
Technique of Cleft Lip and Palate in Dubai
The surgery is done under General Anesthesia which will be given by a Specialised Paediatric Anaesthetist.
The defect in the lip is closed by advancing bunched up tissue on either side of the cleft. The mucosa (mouth lining), muscle layer and skin layer are separated from each other and repaired sequentially.
Palate is also repaired in a similar manner. But in palate the muscles for speaking and pronunciation located in the soft palate (back part of the roof of mouth) are repaired meticulously as well, so as to give the best speech outcomes when the baby starts speaking.
Recovery
- The baby will need few days to recuperate from the injury.
- You will need to visit the doctor a few times for dressing to ensure your healing is going well.
- Once stitches are removed, you will be advised some scar treatments to ensure the marks heal well.
- An important aspect in recovery is the Speech Therapy (training of speech to get the pronunciation right) and Orthodontics (clips for teeth, to ensure they grow straight, later in life). When to start, how to do it and how long will be intimated by Dr Suhas during your recovery process.
- Avoiding direct sunlight and using sun protection is important to avoid darkening of the scar areas.
- Good nutritious food, regular medicines, rest, adequate hydration will help the baby heal faster.
